Tony Sciliberto from Welland, ON Canada | Signed on: Fri 15 Feb 2008 07:19:40 AM MST Hi Saul, Just finished reading your book, Tour de Life. It's great how you came out of your coma. I'm a cycle-fit instructor here at our YMCA. I enjoy teaching the spinning classes. My license plate says CYCLE-FIT on it. The reason I'm writing, I know exactly what you and your family when through. I have my sister-in-law who suffered a blood clod to her. lungs and went into a coma. She went without oxygen for about 30 minutes according to doctors. She is badly brain damaged. She has a son who is 15 years of age who is now living with us. This boy's father passed away when he was only 2 years old. His mother is all he has and now to see her in this condition breaks his heart. We are taking care of him, but it's not the same. We are praying that she will come out of her coma. She is beening fed with a tube that runs to her stomach. This happen on Oct. 3 2007 and the Hospital wanted to write her off. It's been 4 months. She now opens her eyes and looks around but she cannot talk. We don't even know if she knows any of us. We are there everyday at the Hospital caring and praying for her. We are wishing for a miracle. We know that she will never be herself, but we want her back to the point that we can start talking to her. Thanks for listening. Best of Luck to you. A Fan Tony

Ed from York, Pennsylvania | Signed on: Fri 08 Feb 2008 10:33:37 AM MST Saul, I was at the Tour of Georgia last year and saw you riding the course. Hearing of your story inspired me to purchase your book at one of the starts. Unfortunately later that year Iexperienced my own bicycling accident. While riding my road bike through town, a woman opened her car door into my chest. The accident had damaged my phrenic nerve. This is the nerve that controls the use of the diaphragm. While in the hospital thoughts of your struggle kept giving me hope that not only would I be able to ride but that I would eventually be able to participate in amature racing again. It is a year later and I still have not recoverd enough to race, but I am riding better with each day and I still have hope. Thank you. You still inspire me and give me hope that I can be better. |

I share the passion for fitness and cycling, and want to say your an inspiration to me, after everything you went through you picked up the peices and started over, with a great attitude. I take my helmet off for you, and hope to join one of your rides one day. Thanks, Jeff |

Deb-A Brain Injury M from San Diego | Signed on: Sat 02 Feb 2008 08:31:55 PM MST Hi Saul, Wish there was a way to meet you before you leave. I live in San Diego and you are at Sea World tonight receiving a well deserved award! I would drive down there if I knew we there was a chance we could talk. My 23 yr old son has also been through a near fatal brain injury. He was 21 when he fell skateboarding and ended up in an induced coma, had a craniotomy to relieve swelling on his brain etc. His accident was 2 years ago and he is back at school finishing his college education. Quite a miracle too! He has a heart to help others avoid brain injury and has done some speaking at schools about safety when participating in sports. Your foundation sounds wonderful and I hope you're able to help many people. I would love to talk with you. My email is beachdeb@gmail.com. Wishing you much success Saul.

David Demery from Brandon Florida | Signed on: Sun 20 Jan 2008 11:12:43 AM MST Saul Congradulations on your wedding. I had a bad start to this year. I had trouble breathing and finally went to the hospital and got a xray and they came in and ask if I had two lungs. So after about 4 days I went to Tampa General Hospital and they keep me on oxygen. Finally after another week I had a bronk surgery. I have a trake so they didn't have to cut me they just went in through the trake. They found my broncal was blocked by scar tissue. Then they used a lazer to remove it. I feel fine now but still have to lay off the bike riding for a couple of weeks so the IV area heals. I head back to work tomorrow after two weeks off feels great to be back to almost normal. Looking forward to going to the Brasstown Bald mountain stage of the Tour de Georgia this year. |

Scott Kelley from Suwanee, GA | Signed on: Thu 17 Jan 2008 10:17:43 AM MST Saul, I read Tour de Life and watched you at US Pro. You've come such a long way -- its very impressive. It was sad to see the words,"Mes rêves de pour faire le vélo professional sont morts." I just read a book by Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert, entitled "Stick to Drawing Comics, Monkey Brain!: Cartoonist Ignores Helpful Advice." The book has a story titled "Good News Day." I think you would find it enjoyable and hopeful. The gist of the story is that Adam's does a lot of pubic speaking in addition to cartooning. He loses his voice due to a condition called functional dysphonia. Doctros tell him the loss is permanent. Basically, the brain has lost the wiring to allow him to speak. One day, while playing with his niece, he figures out that he can speak in rhyme and achieve his full voice. He attempts this for a while and "remaps" his brain to speaking. He cures himself. Its a nice story and I hope it gives you hope that one day you will re-attain your skills. If you would like the story, I can e-mail you a copy at skelley@optrexusa.com Good luck to you in all you do. Scott |

I hope the feelings you two are sharing now will remain as strong decades from now. I read your book last summer just after it came out. I am sorry to hear you will not be able to return to professional cycling, but I know you will find other avenues to make your mark on the world. |

Diane Roy from Houston | Signed on: Sun 13 Jan 2008 04:32:25 PM MST Saul, Just finished your book...I couldn't put it down. Touched me one two levels: one I am a PT and I work on the Brain Injury team of an inpatient rehab facility in houston, and second, I am also an avid amatuer cyclist (off-road mostly). Your story is an inspirning one to so many. I will recommend it to patients an families that are dealing with overcoming traumatic brain injuries. I just read one of your latest blogs, and although you may not be able to race professionally again, I have no doubt that you will do great things!! Thanks for sharing your story with me and so many others! Congratulations on your marriage! |
