Gabe Denes from Columbus, GA | Signed on: Tue 11 Mar 2008 06:25:32 AM MST Hi Saul- Writing you from Columbus, GA. On a sunny Sunday afternoon about 12 noon on Feb 3, 2008, my friend and teammate Scott Matty was run over by a car and killed while on a training ride coming back from Buena Vista, GA. My other friend, Jeff Davis, suffered severe spinal injuries. Scott went under the SUV, and Jeff flew over the SUV. Both were riding in normal formation along GA Hwy 315, and did nothing out of the ordinary. They had just circled back from a group of about 7 or 8 riders to be with their families. A 17 year old girl hit them from behind. Both didn't see it coming. Scott was a M45+ road racer, and was an aspiring Cat III. Our club, Columbus Bike Racing, grieves for Scott. However, Jeff survived, and is currently hospitalized at Shepherd in Atlanta. His Carepage is Jeffmdavis. He is progressing well, and just took his first steps. I followed your progress while you were at Shepherd. I know it would mean a lot to Jeff if you could write him in support, and if you're in Atlanta area and have some time, I know he'd love a visit from someone like you who has been through the very difficult rehab process. Many thanks, Gabriel Denes Columbus, GA Comment: I am so sorry to hear this. Please leave me your contact information. -S |

Vince from Sussex, England | Signed on: Mon 10 Mar 2008 02:37:02 AM MST I had a serious bike accident too when a vehicle hit me. I was lucky to survive thanks to a guy who stopped me bleeding to death. Like a lot of head injury victims I have absolutely no memory other than "waking up" one day in hospital. The TBI is the hidden injury - I am now able to deal with all the physical injuries [fractured skull, broken bones, punctured lung], loss of fitness - and am making a good recovery; but I am aware that my behaviour has changed and it makes it hard on the rest of my family. Good luck to Saul with his foundation |

Kelley from Philadelphia | Signed on: Thu 06 Mar 2008 08:11:12 PM MST Hi Saul, We have much in common. A little over year ago, I too suffered from a severe grade 3 TBI where I flipped over my handlebars of my bike right into a 4-way intersection. I suffered from two seizures and was unconscious for several hours. I was med-vac-ed to the nearest hospital where I was in intensive care for some time. I had pretty severe brain hemorrhage and suffered from severe broken bones (and countless other injuries). I have no memory of that day and for the next several months following the accident. I was told I would not be able to lead a normal life again, never mind get on a bike a ride. I had no balance, no coordination, no memory, and couldn't even remember to feed myself or how to get to walk to the corner store. Amazingly, thru sheer determination and will, I taught myself to live again. I returned to racing the following year much to my Drs surprise (and I am sure angst). At 29 yrs old, I am lucky to be able to get on the bike after a severe accident. I read your book and all of it reminded me of my struggles.I had some good friends, who like your family, helped me get thru this traumatic experience. Although I will never gain my memory of those months, and my short term memory is forever shot, I think we are both lucky to be alive. Every time I get on my bike to train/ride, I realize how lucky we are to be able to ride again in any capacity. Enjoy riding this weekend! |

James Irvine from San Diego, CA | Signed on: Wed 05 Mar 2008 11:06:11 PM MST Hey Saul, I heard you got to ride the Moab ride for cancer and was especially excited to see someone of your stature not only make it back the way you did, but being able to raise money for charity is truly a special gift. I live in SD and just missed you, when last you were here, but I also raise funds and awareness for cancer through UCSD. There is a child named Mike, whom loves not only your team but your story and is bed-stricken with cancer and was wondering if he could have an authentic team memoribilia to honor you and your cause. We would glad pay if you like, but it would be a gift from the hospital as her parents don't have much. Please let us know. We spoke highly of your success along with Lance A. Giving these kids a bit of opportunity really raises they're spirits. Thanks a lot, James Irvine img.james.irvine.sports@gmail.com |

Amanda Hurren from Brigham City, Utah | Signed on: Sat 01 Mar 2008 10:32:42 AM MST Dear Saul & Family, I am just finishing up your book and I want to tell you how much hope it has given me. Let me explain my situation...almost seven months ago my fiance wrecked on a bullet bike and as a result suffered major brain damage. At the time I was nine months pregnant with our child and gave birth to her two weeks later. The doctors told us he would never make it out of the ICU and if he did his life would never be more than a "vegetable". He has made it far from the "vegetable" state but still has a long ways to go. He is starting to talk little by little now and it is the best thing in the world to finally hear something come from his mouth. After reading your book my spirits were lifted and my faith was restored that recovery is possible. I know you are an extremely busy person and the chances of you actually reading this are slim but, I would love the chance to talk with you and your family and exchange stories. Also if you could give me any kind of an idea on what resources are available to help my fiance it would mean the world to me! Feel Free to contact me at ahurren81@yahoo.com. Once again I think you are an amazing person with an amazing family and i wish the best for you and your future in racing. P.S. Utah aint that bad of a place to train if you come in the summer! |

Erin C. from St. Louis, Missouri | Signed on: Fri 29 Feb 2008 02:39:32 PM MST Thank you for writing this booking and giving people a birdseye view into your life. I have found the book both inspiring and educational. I was reading your book, when on 09/28/07 while out for a bike ride I received a call that my father was being rushed to the hospital because they believed an aneurysm had ruptured in his brain. It was very large and in his frontal lobe. My father had multiple brain surgeries and has made a miracle recovery like your own. Your book gave me an inside view of what to expect from brain injuries. Thank you again. It would be great to have your brain injury awareness brought to St. Louis. Erin eccarroll@hotmail.com |

Crystal N from Beth PA | Signed on: Tue 26 Feb 2008 03:17:51 PM MST Dear Saul Raisin, Hi my name is Crystal Nunnemacher. I知 almost 18 and I知 a Velodrome racer in Pa. I知 at the make or brake stage. Well so far it is the brake stage. In the beginning of January I found out I have Patellofemoral or in human terms Patella and tendencies. Which I have to do physical therapy (racing at the velodrome starts in May). I feel as if I知 not going to get back racing and losing interest of racing. See in a year I well be going to college for Physical Therapy (what a choice). I believe I wont have time to train to race. So I feel as if I知 wasting money this year training with a coach and all the other expenses. (Real quick last year I was 2nd in the nation at Jr. nationals for 500mts and match sprints.) So I really don稚 know what to do!! I know my dad would love to see me race this year. And a lot of people say I知 very strong and believe in me. I just don稚 know what I want to do. I知 so confused. I know it痴 noting compared to what happen to you or to others! But you probably get a lot of stories like that. But the real reason I want to write to you because I read your book like 3 times. It is amazing. What you went threw and how you survive. When someone asks who is my hero I would have to say Saul Raisin. What makes me say that then is what you been threw but you now have a wonderful charity and you DO make a difference in peoples lives. Especially people with spinal injuries. You make people relies that they can make it threw it. I would greatly appreciate if you could respond to hinder4l@verizon.net thanks, Crystal
