HI Saul...I am so glad to learn you are doing well...I too had a few head injuries....one racing my bike before helmets were mandatory and I am living proof that you will have 100 per cent recovery. I still ride and love the bike. You were a big surprise when I first read about how you went ot Europe and your pesistance and committment...no matter what it is you choose to do in life from this point forward you will be successful by applying those same virtures that took you so far in cycling...here's to love of life! josef

Saul, you are an inspiration to many. Tackle your recovery as hard as you tackle you training and racing. From a few Cat 4/5 racers in Alpharetta keep your chin up and you'll be suffering (in a good way) on the bike before you know it.
Peace and God speed you to full recovery.

I was so impressed at your attack during the world championships last year, if you attack your recovery with half that effort you will be back to 100% in no time. Best of luck!

My husband is from Rome Georgia, and we are both cycling enthusiasts. I can tell by your site, that you are someone with great determination, drive, discipline, and most importantly spirit. A friend, a pro track cyclist, had a serious accident many years back. Like you, has an incredible fighting spirit. Not only did he heal, he went on to participate in the Atlanta and Sydney Olympics. I don't doubt that each day you will see yourself get stronger. Take care.

I first read of your son in Velonews a little while ago at the worlds. I am a casual cycling fan and try to keep up with things. Saul seems to be a young man every parent would want to have. Recently (four weeks ago) my wife and I had our first child. I cannot imagine the emotional stress you must be under. For a parent to witness their child in such a condition is traumatic indeed. Unfortunately, events such as this remind us of the ultimate balance sheet. I sincerely hope that Saul recovers completely and that, along the way, the two of you remember to breathe. Don't forget to take care of each other as you take care of Saul. Tired and stressed family members do no one any good. Given that I look forward to seeing your son in the pink in the future after this, the truly toughest race.

Regards

A nephew of mine (27 yr old) suffered a closed head injury ~ 2 yrs ago; family didn't know if he would survive or what survival would look like. By God's grace he made it home and did the hard work of physical therapy. Now he's working two jobs and hoping to finally start college! Hang in there.

If you heal as quickly as you go uphill, you'll be back on the bike in no time. Thanks for being a positive, visible role model to kids, a great ambassador for the sport, and a talented athlete. Keep inspiring us.

Saul,
Great to have you back with us again. I've got a feeling that your therapists will have never seen the like of you before. Show them what a bike racer is.

Patience will be the hardest part of this for you, but you're on your way. Stay strong.

All cyclists fall, but most of us aren't fast enough to fall that hard, and cetainly we're not tough enough to recover as fast as you seem to be. Best of luck with the rest of the rehab and know that everyone who throws a leg over a bike (and a good many who don't) are pulling for you to come back up to full steam in a hurry.

Hi there dude, I came to the credit training camp in 2003 i think it was when you were with the espoir team. we rode up the coast from hyeres to st tropez or somewhere and back through the hills....i remember it being a gorgeous day and since then i ve been trying to remember the nikname the french had for you and i cant for the life of me remember. had to do with grapes i think...in any case, Ive heard varying reports about your crash, if it is due to epilepsy and you need any info i started racing when i was 23 because while living in the US at the time i had my first seizure (never found out why) and my drivers license was taken away for a year. soooo, i started riding my bike to work and then raced to 6 world titles and 2 olympic silvers all the while on treatment for epilepsy which is at long last (ive tried most of them) down to a few good molecules that dont put you to sleep (the first i tried was dilantin and i slept 19 hrs a day). If i can help in any way give a hollar to my email-marionclignet@aol.com

Saul & Family -
just got back from Ghana to the good news that you are back in the States. Congratulations on the first phase of the road back to racing! I hope this doesn't sound off-base but I wanted to share a story with you. Two weeks before your crash I decked it at around 45kph in a gravel-filled downhill hairpin, resulting in 2 cracked ribs and a lot of road rash. I did a bunch of whining to friends and family as I hobbled around and tried not to breathe too much. Then I read about you going down and it put things into perspective in a big way. You have inspired me for years as a strong, clean racer - now you inspire me as a fighter, recovering from your battle with the tarmac. I know that you will be back in the peloton soon. Keep on keepin' on - Eric
