hello saul sounds as if you are coming along. i continue to try and read your emails and as i said before it is impressive all the support you have and what a gift you gave your mom for mothers day -so now you will have to come up with another one for fathers day! i heard you were suppose to have a little visitor this weekend?!?!?-rachel. hope she got to visit.did she tell you about their "field"day at brookwood. kelli told me they won some 4 out of 5 of the events and i think rachel won one of them. she said they were quite impressive for second graders. they called themselves the "sharks". your uncle screen printed their shirts with a picture of one and it had shropshire's sharks on it-wow that is a tongue twister!!!!! well better get to work. you continue to be in our thoughts and prayers-take care/ work hard which it sounds like you are doing. keep the staff on their toes. bobby karla & kelli

Saul - I'm a friend of Felicia & Randy up Jersey-way... I rode 1300 miles last year, including 250 in Israel, raising money for Alyn Children's Hospital in Jerusalem.

But you're obviously in the pro class, which I personally find so impressive. I wish you a full and speedy recovery - so you can get back out on the bike, and do what you obviously enjoy doing. All the best...

Hi Saul,
I was in Madrid for the World Championships last year and you were SO IMPRESSIVE!
I know it will take a long time and a lot of hard work, but I hope to see you win the World the next time you race it. That will make you look great on the top step of the podium at the TDF with the World Champion stripes on your sleeve.
God bless you and your family.

After reading John Trotter's post I decided to also repost something that I put up a little earlier; perhaps now that you're feeling better, reading this stuff may help you along in your recovery.

I knew a guy a little while back that had the unfortunate luck of falling off of a 500 foot cliff while hiking with some friends. Besides being in a week long coma, he broke his back, neck, ribcage, and arm (literally snapped in two, the xrays were gnaaarly). He also punctured his lung, endured temporary paralysis, and suffered from a bruised brain and heart. We went to visit him three weeks later not really knowing what to expect. Suprisingly, he was the same weird/goofy guy he's always been, except armed with a bunch of new and amusing stories about terrorizing the hospital staff (he was also excited about some rather strange daily achievements that I suppose we normally take for granted). When he was first flown into the hospital, they didn't expect him to survive his injuries, and yet 9 months later he was back with his hardcore band (he's a drummer), recorded a new full length and I believe he is already back to touring.

There's more info in their one-sheet bio here:
http://www.rivalryrecords.com/onesheets/Onesheet_RVL013.pdf

Anyway, I hope hearing about these stories in your guestbook is a useful tool to help you plow through recovery. I'm sure you won't need it, but I wish you the best of luck.

Take care,
-Dick

I went through a similar experience to you, except I wasn't a cyclist then. The one thing that stays with me is my impatience to get better, and the frustration when things didn't go as fast as I wanted them to. Everything seemed so hard. I would sit there and think and think and think, and things just wouldn't come to me. And I would struggle with my body, and it wouldn't do what I wanted. I remembered just back when... when I didn't have these problems. How could things have changed so quickly? It took a long time for things to sort themselves out. Now I am a cyclist (not a very good one). I am becuase no one thought I could. I have my issues. I tell my left foot to clip out, and it may be thinking about the weather and not obey. I fall alot. I want to yell out "Brain Injury! Spinal Cord Injury!," but I just look sheepish and stand back up again. I will be doing the Danskin Triathlon this year (at least I hope I am.) It will be right before my 10 year anniversary of my accident. When I run I look like a goober. I run a 16 minute mile. My swimming alarms lifeguards, and my cycling ain't too bad. I will dedicate to all of us who are out there becuase we can, because we almost couldn't. My dream for you is that some day you get back on your bike and say to yourself, I almost couldn't do this again, and in almost losing this, I love it even more. Peace and tranquility for now.
