Todd Rosvold from Pulaski, WI | Signed on: Fri 27 Oct 2006 08:23:50 AM MST Hi Saul, I just read your VeloNews feature dated October 15, 2006. You are recovering marvelously and I wish you continued gains in your health and a successful return to the pro Peloton. In the early part of the article you were asked what type of problems you are still experiencing and you said that now you "lie a lot," which is totally out of character when you think you are telling the truth. In 1998 I had a bad crash in a bike race and sustained head injuries. While nowhere near as serious as you I experienced and still experience some short term memory problems. My wife is a speech pathologist - in her profession she works extensively with people who have experienced brain injury and trauma - and noticed it right away because I never had memory problems before. It took me quite awhile to admit that my memories of events were sometimes flawed or that I could not even remember them sometimes. The good news is that there are coping skills to help overcome these small lapses. I record everything because writing it down helps (I'm now a slave to Microsoft Outlook), and am able to manage a business with 50 employees. I've told my key office personnel my occasional problems with memory and they also help me by communicating important information in writing or repeating it. Surprisingly, my good friends figured iit out for themselves and seem to be doing the same things. Talk to your doctor about coping skills for your situation. Don't think of yourself lying, it's your brain's misfires that are causing you to either forget something or remember it incorrectly. Lying implies telling untruth's on purpose, you're not doing that. You have a real memory that is incorrect. My wife tells me that the brain can actually continue healing for a lot longer time than we used to believe, so your symptoms could lessen. Good luck in the future and keep the rubber side down, and the bike between the ditches. trosvold@netnet.net

Jason from Washington, DC | Signed on: Fri 27 Oct 2006 07:38:02 AM MST Saul: I am soo very happy to see you doing so well. It is nothing short of miraculous and something that we all prayed for. You look awesome on the bike and your glow has returned to your face, and a spart to your eyes. Words cannot express how happy I am for you and your family! Your progress has been an amazing inspiration to my wife Larissa who has had a very bad health year. She had a one in a million diagnosis followed by surgery and when we thought it was over she has had soo much problems with complications and nerve damage. She is a fighter and going through so much pain and rehab. I feel horrible to ask, but could you drop her a line at prinslia@gmail.com I am sure it would make her soo happy and help her so much. She needs a good email from someone who has also gone through so much. I really hate to make the request, but I am a husband who has watched his wife suffer through so much and all I want to do is do something to help her and perhaps have someone else out there who can relate to her recover and inspire her. Thanks for the updates, thank you for your inspiration. I thank g-d for your recovery. All the very best, -Jason Herman jasonaherman71@gmail.com |
